Third Passion Prediction † |

Matthew 20:17-19 * |
Mark 10:32-34 * |
Luke 18:31-34 * |
|
17 While Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and said to
them on the way, 18 "See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man
will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn
him to death; 19 then they will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and
flogged and crucified; and on the third day he will be raised." |
32 They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was
walking ahead of them; they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid.
He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was to happen to
him, 33 saying, "See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man
will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will
condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles; 34 they
will mock him, and spit upon him, and flog him, and kill him; and after three
days he will rise again." |
31 Then he took the twelve aside and said to them, "See, we
are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of
Man by the prophets will be accomplished. 32 For he will be handed over to the Gentiles; and he will be
mocked and insulted and spat upon. 33 After they have flogged him, they will
kill him, and on the third day he will rise again." 34 But they
understood nothing about all these things; in fact, what he said was hidden
from them, and they did not grasp what was said. |

Precedence among the Disciples † |

Matthew 20:20-28 * |
Mark 10:35-45 * |
Luke 12:50; 22:24-27 * |

20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her
sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him. 21 And he said to
her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Declare that these
two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in
your kingdom." 22 But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are
asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They
said to him, "We are able." 23 He said to them, "You will
indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to
grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father." 24 When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that
the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are
tyrants over them. 26 It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great
among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wishes to be first among you
must be your slave; 28 just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to
serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." |
35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and
said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What is it you
want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at
your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know
what you are asking. Are you able to
drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am
baptized with?” 39 They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I
drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will
be baptized; 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to
grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James
and John. 42 So Jesus called them and
said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as
their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over
them. 43 But it is not so among you;
but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and
whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man came not to be served
but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” |
12:50 I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what
stress I am under until it is completed! ------- 22:24 A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them
was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 But he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it
over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But
not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest,
and the leader like one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who is at
the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among
you as one who serves. |
